Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are a macronutrient made up of carbon hydrogen and oxygen.
They are the bodies first choice energy source!
The body metabolises carbohydrates into glucose to provide the bodies energy.
Sources of carbohydrates include, pasta, potatoes, rice.
There are 3 categories of carbohydrates
Monosaccharides
Single sugar - Glucose, Fructose, Galactose.
Disaccharides
Dual sugar - Maltose, Fructose, Sucrose.
Polysaccharides
Multi sugars - Glycogen, Starch, Cellulose.
No matter what types are consumed in the diet, carbohydrates are stored in the muscles as glycogen.
Excess carbohydrates will be stored as fat.
Simple carbohydrates will result in a quick increase in blood sugars.
Complex carbohydrates will provide a slow increase in blood sugars.
Athletes should plan to increase their intake of carbohydrates to meet demands of competition.
