Healthy Holiday Tips

It’s the summer holidays and that means trips away with family and friends. Sun, sea, sand, food and drink! Most people find that when they get back from their holidays they have piled on a few extra pounds. So how do you avoid the holidays weight gain? Here are a few tips to help you keep trim throughout your holidays.

1. How often have we used the excuse “I just don’t have time to exercise”? Vacation is the ideal time to work out. Get the whole family involved in cycling to see the sights, runs along the beach, daily swims in the pool, or even just walking around town.
2. When you are travelling think ahead and pack plenty of healthy snacks. Long waits and lengthy transfers play havoc with our eating patterns and often we go without food for a long time (which can slow your metabolism) and then overindulge on high calorie foods from airport shops.
3. If you are eating out a lot on holiday, as many of us do, try to order meals that contain vegetables, pulses and/or whole grains. If heading to America remember it is notorious for large portions, don’t get into the habit of eating mountains of food just because it’s put in front of you.
4. Drink plenty of bottled water to keep you hydrated, especially if you in a hot climate. Often your body confuses hunger and thirst so drink some water to double-check what it is your body actually needs.
5. If you are easily tempted by desserts and the phrase “sure I’m on my holidays” becomes your new best friend, opt for sorbets or fresh fruit rather than those creamy calorie laden offerings.

Follow these tips and you never know you might come back from your holidays fitter than when you left!!
